How To Overcome

Agoraphobia

What Is Agoraphobia?

If you suffer this disorder you don’t want to be seen In public or go to unfamiliar places. In severe cases, you will confine yourself to home, since you see this as your only refuge.

This particular phobia Is considered to be the worst kind of all phobia's because you shut yourself off from the world. If you are lucky, you may experience mild symptoms so you avoid certain people and places. But If you suffer from severe symptoms, then It could really be debilitating.

The symptoms for someone suffering this phobia Include confusion, feelings of depression, loss of self esteem and self confidence as well as other phobias. The physical symptoms are blurred vision, difficulty In breathing, dizziness, headaches, heart palpitations, Indigestion, nausea, muscle pain, trembling hands and panic attacks.

If you have severe symptoms you won’t be able to function outside of your home. No one wants to live In fear. Sadly, those who have experienced a panic attack do not have the capability to take control of their lives and have become prisoners In their own homes.

Many people think Agoraphobia Is the fear of being In public places. Actually, It Is the threat of a similar panic attack that has happened before. The good news about agoraphobia Is that It can be treated.

It Is related to other disorders that begin In the mind. Examples of these include other anxiety disorders like depression and substance abuse.

If you have agoraphobia or know someone who does, the best strategy Is to take this problem one step at a time.

Treatment:

If you have been diagnosed with with this phobia, treatment will usually begin with medication. The two most frequently used are tranquilizers and anti-depressants. It Is soon followed by therapy. Some examples of these Include behavior therapy, behavior modification, classical conditioning and cognitive therapies.

Not all doctors are knowledgeable about every type of treatment, this Is why when you are looking for a specialist, you should ask what they usually use and do some research about It.

If your doctor cannot help you with this problem, you will be referred either to a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, or social worker. You can make some progress on your own by joining a support group which Is not that hard to find because there are people out there who are also In the same situation.

Since some sufferers do not respond well to medication, this Is the time that other recovery techniques are used, usually behavior therapy. This technique Is designed to change the attitude of the person towards the trigger or the event that he or she fears the most.

Start off with a trip to the doctor, and work with them to find out the best way to begin your recovery.
