What Is Cancer? It Is a disease where cells act abnormally, growing and dividing beyond their usual limits and capabilities. The spread of the aggressive cells then Invade, damage and destroy nearby tissues.
This disease may occur In every Individual at any age and has a 13% mortality rate. Animals and plants can also be affected by the deadly disease. Most types are due to abnormal genetic composition of the malignant cells that can result from environmental factors. Normally, cells grow and divide accordingly, they also die at some point. The body Is responsible for keeping the whole division and growth process balanced. Dead and damaged cells are automatically replaced and transformed. Affected and abnormal cells live longer than ordinary cells and rapidly form new abnormal ones. These are also common types liver, colon or colorectal, pancreatic, bladder, ovarian, endometrial, bone, cutaneous melanoma or skin, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia. Malignant cells are not sensitive to the signals of the body that limit growth and spread. They constantly replicate and outlive normal cells and even have the ability to Invade and destroy nearby tissues just to multiply. Prevention: Diet plays a vital role In reducing risks and there are also foods that can alleviate the symptoms If affected cells are already present. These food sources are rich In nutrients and other agents that Inhibit abnormal cell growth and reproduction. These should be maintained regularly In the diet to stay protected and enhance system and organ function. Garlic, onions and other herbs help excrete carcinogens. Vegetables protect the cell’s DNA from damage and mutation. Beans help stop tumors from spreading. Whole grain products protect the cells from damage and fruits also help In the excretion and elimination process. Fruits and vegetables are rich In fiber and high In antioxidant properties that are helpful In fighting and preventing the disease. These food sources are highly effective even In raw, cooked or juiced form. Carrots contain beta carotene, vitamin E and alpha carotene. Broccoli has Isothiocyanates and sulforaphanes. Cabbage also has Isothiocyanates. Green asparagus has saponins. Beets contain proanthocyanidins a number of spices have curcurmin. All of these have cancer fighting actions that significantly reduce the risk of developing the disease. Folate Is highly effective In preventing genetic and DNA mutations. Taking a small amount of folate a day can greatly reduce the risk of developing the disease. Examples of sources high In folate are oranges, cereals, spinach, romaine lettuce and peas.
Treatments: Chemotherapy Is the use of any drug to treat people with any form of disease. The term Is commonly used In conjunction with the treatment of cancer that may also be referred to as antineoplastic therapy, anti cancer therapy and cytotoxic or cell destroying therapy. Cytotoxic or a combination of drugs are used In a treatment regimen to alleviate symptoms of the Illness caused by rapidly and abnormally proliferating and Invading cancer cells. Chemotherapy Is often the primary treatment given to patients afflicted with this Illness. It Is different from other conventional methods like surgery and radiation since It affects the entire body. It Is a systemic treatment where the drugs circulate to act on the affected cells that have moved outside the area of origin. There are over 100 drugs at present Involved In chemotherapy that may be used Independently or as a mixture or cocktail. The drugs have different compositions, modes of administration, side effects and end results. Chemotherapy primarily aims to cure cancer by eliminating tumor growth completely. If cure Is Impossible, the next goal Is to control or manage the Illness by Improving quality of life and helping patients cope with the long term effects. Radiation Therapy Is a mode of treatment that destroys cancer cells and stops them from multiplying by directly releasing high doses of energy waves or particles on the growths or tumor. Radiation Is often used as Initial treatment for cancer during Its early stages when the abnormal cells are still confined In Its area of origin or has spread very little. It can also help to completely remove affected cells after other treatments have been done or can shrink the tumor In Its advanced stages before other treatments will be done. Radiation therapy can be used Independently but Is more effective If done concurrently with other treatments like surgery and chemotherapy. Radiation aims to act on cancer cells when they are dividing. Dividing cells are more sensitive to radiation thus can be destroyed or damaged when exposed In relatively high doses. It can also damage normally dividing cells that will cause side effects. People treated with radiation may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, migraine, back pain, tremors, sweating, difficulty sleeping and eating etc. Surgery Is usually a last resort, your doctors would advise you If and when this Is necessary.
